Since I became a professional referee 6 years ago for the National Hockey League, I still enjoy officiating NHL prospects in the Western Hockey League every year. It is so much fun skating with these young players who are so strong, tall and fast. Their skill is impressive and I enjoy the verbal sparring and the one-liner jokes that we share with each other.
Besides officiating other professional sports such as the National Lacrosse League and the Professional Golfers Association, I do enjoy officiating the NHL the best. I am just thankful for the Seattle Thunderbirds organization for giving me the continual opportunity and I am thankful that I can keep up with these skaters on the ice year after year.
That’s me, holding back that giant!
I am so blessed and thankful for my family. I am thankful that I have been able to help so many people in so many ways. I am thankful that I have been able to work and teach as an USA Hockey official, Canadian Hockey official, baseball umpire, soccer official, NCAA hockey official, Junior Hockey official, WHL official and also as a Professional IFL, NHL, NLL and PGA official. I am thankful that I have been given the gift of writing and have written and published so many works including 19 novels. I am thankful that I have been able to work in so many industries. I am thankful for people I have know only for a short time and who I have known all my life. I am thankful for my health and freedom to live in the greatest country in the world. I am thankful for education and travel. In this season I don’t want this to be the only time to remember all I have to be thankful for; I want to remember to be thankful all year long!
I became a professional official in my fourth professional sport this weekend when I worked as a PGA official. The players were very humble and very good. The crowds were very respectful and the venue was incredibly beautiful. The view and the golf were spectacular.
Now that I have been an official for multiple professional sports and have been behind the scenes of each, I understand what a large operation it is to set up such events. This event, by far, was the largest organization of equipment and individuals, manpower and materials, I have ever seen in my life. Even when I was in the military I have not seen such an elaborate organization of resources. It was massive and impressive on every level and I am proud and fortunate to be a part of it. Everyone did a fabulous job.
