Here is the first page of my novel, “The Dutch Muse.”

“Prelude

She smiles at him through the dim gas light and candle smoke. He always works with candles and incense, regardless of time of day. The natural flame brings him closer to nature. The incense awakens all of his senses. It is raining today so he cannot use the day light while he works, but he must see her and so bids her come to his studio every day, rain or shine. She is naked and he is both aroused and inspired as he continues to sketch her. His paints are nearby, as is an empty canvas, but he will not paint her when the sketch is complete, he will sculpt her. The fire burns upon the wide hearth.
“What could be closer to God?” he asks himself. “I sketch, I paint, now I sculpt, imitating my creator and creation.
“Master, I must shift,” she whispers.
“Very well,” he answers. She moves an arm of fairest skin, turns from the profile to mostly frontal, shifts her hips slightly, to reveal both…”

With bridges falling down around me here in Seattle, I am reminded how frail life can be!

One must often be reminded how frail life can be, to better appreciate the privilege one is given and to make the most of every day, in this short life, since one never knows when it will end.  Recently, a bridge that I have driven across hundreds of times collapsed!  There were people on it at the time and many injuries resulted.  I am fortunate that I was not driving across it when it fell in, but it reminds me that it could have been me and that life is frail.

With that thought in mind, I am once again inspired to endeavor to make every day as valuable as I can and to seize the day and live life to the fullest every day.  I know it will be difficult and sometimes seem impossible, with obstacles everywhere, but I will try my best and always remember that life is frail and short, so live it!

Having served as a Peacekeeper in the military, I have preserved our freedoms.

Having served in the military as a Peacekeeper, stationed in Europe, guarding against terrorism, and protecting our country and our allies during the war with Iraq, I have helped to preserve many freedoms.  One of the freedoms is to live in peace and to not be attacked.  We are protected in this country against attack by the military that I served.  But many countries are unprotected.

One such country that was largely unprotected during a recent attack is Georgia, near Russia.  This country was subject to rape, pillage and murder.  As much as this sounds like a Viking invasion or a medieval slaughter, it’s shocking to know that it happened not many years ago, in this century!  And those who perpetrated such horrible crimes were never punished.  How can this happen today, in our society, our culture, our technologically advanced world?  It does.  And we are no better than invading Viking hoards or murdering medieval slaughter parties!  We need to more concerned with preserving freedom all over the world and not let politics get in the way of protecting innocent people.

Our excellent Memorial Day weekend was all about timing!

Sometimes in life, everything is all about timing! Just like comedy, timing can be everything and make the difference between a huge accident and a positive life-changing event. This Memorial Day we went golfing, got there and played, and got off the course just before the crowds and rain came! We went to the movies and got out just before the crowds came. The next day, we took a hike to Wallace Falls and finished just before the rain came. And finally, we bar-b-qued and got everything cooked and finished all at the same time.

For the bar-b-q we grilled hot wings, made fresh corn, and whipped up some secret recipe baked beans, adding such goodies as brown sugar, bacon and carmelized red onions. It turned out to be a wonderful weekend and was full of great timing!

I wandered into a dollar store the other day and guess what I found?

I haven’t seen this candy for years! It used to be one of my favorites. So I had to buy it and when I tasted it, a flood of childhood memories came rushing back to me! It reminded me of Halloween trick-or-treating when I was young and of great Christmas stockings filled with candy. Many great memories of my childhood then resurfaced and as I ate the sweet treat, I reveled in the glory of youth.

In the same dollar store, I also found “Bottlecaps,” Peanut Clusters and “Razzles!” Remember Razzles: It’s a gum, it’s a candy, it’s both! Again, I enjoyed each of these candies that I thought was lost from my childhood. Now that I have found them again I am going to make a regular pilrimage to that dollar store and enjoy!

Summer flowers and flowering bushes are blooming!

My Summer  flowers and flowering bushes are flourishing this Summer!  My orange azalea bush looks like fireworks again this year and smells like heaven!  My roses have just started to bloom.  My lavender is full of bees and butterflies.  My lilac tree is purple and fragrant.  My giant daisies are already four feet high.  And my four bushes of rhodies, each with a different color, are all alight!  The flowers on the rhodies are full of color and bees and scent.  It is a wonderful time of year.

Soon my lavender will burst into color and scent and my roses will flourish.  The giant daisies will grow to five feet high then sprout their strikingly white flowers.  My grape-vine will be full of leaves and baby fruit.  My apple tree blossoms will turn to apples and at last, my star-gazer lilies will crown off the Summer with their huge, glorious petals and intoxicating scent!   Bring on the Summer!

We visited Fado Irish pub again, and the land of Tir Na Nog.

We visited Fado Irish pub again, in downtown Seattle.  We had the full Irish breakfast, Irish coffee, and, of course, Guinness!  The food and drink were excellent and the atmosphere was magical.  I highly recommend anyone who visits Seattle to visit Fado.  We also learned more about the land of Tir Na Nog and the legend that goes with it.

Read about the legend of Tir Na Nog:
